Embracing the Beautiful Chaos: Life, Family, and a Decadent Candy Bar Poke Cake

Life can be wonderfully messy, much like this incredible Candy Bar Poke Cake. It’s a glorious concoction of sweet, salty, crunchy, and chewy textures – truly, everything delightful packed into one unforgettable dessert. This cake isn’t just delicious; it’s a celebration of joyful indulgence, much like finding beauty in the everyday chaos of a busy home.

From Pristine Rooms to Flour-Dusted Counters: My Journey with “Clean”

My upbringing was in a bustling household with ten children. When I was younger, and there were “only” five of us (which, in retrospect, hardly seems like a small number!), we resided in a modest three-bedroom house. One room was exceptionally tiny, barely fitting a single twin bed. Another served as the main bedroom for my parents, while the third was a spacious attic room with charming slanted ceilings. This arrangement meant four children shared one large room, and one fortunate child enjoyed the solitude of their own space – that coveted tiny bedroom.

Guess who always got their own room? Me! To ensure fairness, my parents instituted a rule: whoever maintained the cleanest area or room earned the privilege of a private space. I consistently won this contest. I genuinely love cleanliness and organization. If you were to ask my family today about my core values, they would undoubtedly mention my blog, my family, and my faith. But almost immediately, they would also highlight my deep appreciation for a tidy home.

However, if you were to visit my house today, you might find this declaration amusing. My home, while generally picked up, is far from what a self-proclaimed perfectionist might typically present. In fact, within our family, we’ve developed two distinct categories for tidiness: “Clean” and “Mom Clean.” “Clean” represents an idealized state of spotless perfection, while “Mom Clean” acknowledges the lived-in reality of a house filled with children, often involving flour-dusted countertops, accidental spills, and the occasional broken egg. It’s a reflection of a vibrant, active life.

Today, I find myself reflecting on how these very lives we lead, complete with their flour-dusted counters and broken eggs, can indeed be a beautiful mess. It’s all about perspective. If we choose to see it that way, the chaos transforms into something profoundly beautiful, a testament to life being lived to the fullest.

Finding Gratitude in the Chaos: A Shift in Perspective

I am truly blessed with a wonderful life, yet sometimes, the accumulation of daily messes can overwhelm me, leading to feelings of frustration and unhappiness. When I immerse myself in creative culinary endeavors, my kitchen often becomes a whirlwind of ingredients and utensils. I accept these “creative messes” as an integral part of my process. I take responsibility for them, and I clean them up without complaint. However, I haven’t always extended the same understanding to the messes made by my children.

Then, a powerful realization dawned on me: I can either allow the messes to drive me crazy and make me unhappy, or I can choose to view them through a new lens. I can embrace them as a vital part of the beautiful, collaborative process of building a life together as a family. My new mission became to actively seek and appreciate the inherent beauty within the mess.

This profound shift in attitude and perspective hasn’t been an easy journey. It’s a daily battle, a continuous effort. Some days, I manage to quietly go about my tasks, cleaning when opportunities arise, and striving not to let minor disarray overwhelm or infuriate me. On other days, my resolve falters, and a frustrated yell might escape, prompting my dear children to swiftly spring into action to tidy up, hoping to appease “Mom.”

Over the years, with four young children, I’ve had to diligently work on relaxing my rigid views on cleanliness. Messes are an inevitable part of our daily existence – they happen everywhere, every day, in countless ways. So, while the struggle with clutter persists, I am progressively learning to appreciate the beauty they represent. More importantly, I’m cultivating a deep sense of gratitude for these messes and what they truly signify about our lives:

  • Clothes strewn on the floor: A joyful indication that we have an abundance of garments to wear, a privilege many do not share.
  • Dishes piled in the sink: A testament to nourishing, healthy meals shared together as a family, fostering connection and well-being.
  • Toys scattered across the floor: A vibrant sign that my children are actively playing, exploring, and engaging their boundless imaginations, creating their own worlds.

Yes, they are messes, undeniable evidence of activity. But if I can just move past the initial overwhelming feeling that accompanies dirt, grime, and a sink overflowing with dishes, and instead focus on what truly matters – the cherished memories and rich lives that contributed to creating those very messes – then they transform into something far more significant and beautiful.

Creating Sweet Memories (and Sweet Messes) with My Kids

After a particularly challenging couple of days with my children, filled with more messes than I felt I had the energy to tackle, I realized I needed a poignant reminder. A reminder that it’s perfectly acceptable for things to be messy, and more crucially, a reminder to seek out the beauty hidden within that mess. What better way to achieve this than through a family baking session?

I invited my children into the kitchen, purposefully to create not just a delicious treat, but also beautiful memories amidst a delightful, sticky mess. I mentally prepared myself for the inevitable cleanup, gathering the right tools, and made it clear to my kids that everyone would need to pitch in during the tidying phase. It was a wonderful opportunity to model both the joy of creation and the responsibility of cleaning up.

And my kitchen floor, dear readers, became a canvas of flour, chocolate, and scattered eggshells! Thank goodness for my trusty O-Cedar Angler Broom. Its unique angled bristles are absolutely indispensable for reaching into those tight corners and hidden crannies under the counters. It made quick work of what was undeniably a grand, beautiful mess.

But beyond the mess, the sheer joy of having all my children, even my two-year-old, enthusiastically helping with the cleanup was truly heartwarming. It wasn’t just about the mess; it was about the shared experience, the laughter, and the valuable life lessons learned together.

Ingredients

  • 1 white cake mix or favorite white cake, prepared according to package directions
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • 1 cup marshmallow fluff
  • 1 TBS heavy cream
  • 1/2 TBS butter
  • 1 1/2 cups caramel sauce
  • 1/2 cup hot fudge sauce
  • 2 candy bars cut into chunks
  • 1/2 cup chopped peanuts or nuts of choice

Instructions

  • Prepare and bake the cake mix according to the package directions in a 9×13 inch pan.
  • While the cake is baking, chop your chosen candy bars into small, bite-sized pieces and set them aside.
  • In a medium microwave-safe bowl, combine chocolate chips, marshmallow fluff, heavy cream, and butter. Heat in 30-second intervals, stirring thoroughly after each interval, until the mixture is fully melted and smoothly incorporated (this usually takes 1-2 minutes total).
  • Once the cake is baked, remove it from the oven. While it’s still warm, use a chopstick or the handle of a wooden spoon to poke numerous holes across the entire top surface of the cake.
  • Evenly pour the caramel sauce over the warm, poked cake, ensuring it seeps into all the holes.
  • Allow the cake to cool for approximately 5 minutes, then gently spread the warm chocolate marshmallow mixture over the caramel layer.
  • Generously sprinkle the chopped nuts and candy bar chunks over the top of the cake.
  • Finish by drizzling the hot fudge sauce in an appealing pattern over the entire surface.
  • Allow the cake to cool completely before slicing and serving to ensure the toppings set properly. Enjoy this delightful treat!

For this specific recipe, I chose a classic white cake mix as its base, but feel free to substitute with your favorite cake flavor. The beauty of a poke cake lies in its simplicity: you bake the cake, then create small holes across its surface. These strategic perforations allow the luscious caramel and other delightful toppings to seep deep into the cake, infusing every bite with rich, moist flavor. My kids absolutely adored it – a true testament to its irresistible appeal!

Once all the decadent toppings were generously applied, I allowed the cake to cool completely, giving the flavors time to meld and the toppings to set perfectly. The anticipation made it taste even better!
