Crafting Your Perfect Caribbean Cruise Itinerary

My recent Caribbean Cruise adventure with Princess Cruises began and ended with a convenient roundtrip journey from Port Everglades in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. This thoughtfully curated itinerary offered a magnificent blend of island charm, historical exploration, and pure relaxation. The diverse stops included the private island oasis of Princess Cays in the Bahamas; the rich historical city of San Juan, Puerto Rico; the adventurous Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic; and the stunning shores of Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos.

A Detailed 7-Day Caribbean Adventure

Here’s a day-by-day breakdown of this incredible journey, showcasing the perfect balance between vibrant port visits and leisurely days at sea:

  • Day 1: Departure from Ft. Lauderdale, Port Everglades – Your journey begins!
  • Day 2: Princess Cays, Bahamas – A day of sun, sand, and sparkling turquoise waters on Princess’s private island.
  • Day 3: At Sea – Enjoy all the amenities and activities your MedallionClass ship has to offer.

This itinerary is truly exceptional, offering a fantastic combination of pristine sandy beaches, sun-drenched days, mesmerizing turquoise waters, fascinating historical sites, delectable culinary experiences, and an abundance of fun-filled activities. It’s designed to ensure you return home feeling completely revitalized.

Seamless Planning & Smart Packing for Your Princess Cruise

Preparing for your Caribbean cruise is an exciting part of the journey. Thoughtful planning and efficient packing will ensure a stress-free and truly enjoyable vacation. Let’s break down the essential steps.

Essential Cruise Planning Steps

Your cruise planning primarily revolves around three core components: orchestrating your travel arrangements to and from the port, selecting captivating excursions for each destination, and scheduling your preferred onboard activities, such as spa treatments or specialty dining experiences. Let’s explore each in detail.

Arranging Your Travel Logistics

When planning your travel to Ft. Lauderdale, consider these crucial questions:

  • When will you arrive in Ft. Lauderdale?
  • Where will you stay the night before your cruise?
  • When will you depart after your cruise?

A crucial tip for cruise travelers is to factor in potential weather-related flight delays. To avoid the significant stress of possibly missing your cruise, which typically departs in the afternoon, I highly recommend flying in at least one day before embarkation. Spending a night in a nearby hotel allows for a leisurely morning and ensures you arrive at the port relaxed and ready for your adventure. Several excellent hotels are conveniently located near Port Everglades, and a quick Uber ride to the port can cost less than $20, making this a smart and affordable pre-cruise strategy.

Booking Shore Excursions with Ease

Once you’ve selected your ideal Caribbean cruise, the next exciting step is to plan your shore excursions. Princess Cruises makes this process incredibly simple and intuitive, allowing you to plan directly from the Princess.com website. Navigate to your specific port of call and browse through a wide array of exciting options.

One feature I particularly appreciated while selecting my excursions online was the comprehensive rating system and detailed information provided for each activity. You can easily view the estimated duration of the excursion, its difficulty level, whether it involves multiple beach visits, recommended attire, and even vivid photos that help visualize the experience. This level of detail empowers you to make informed choices that perfectly align with your interests and activity level.

After narrowing down your preferred activities, you can proceed directly to the Cruise Personalizer to securely book your selections. It’s truly that straightforward! For additional insights, remember that while onboard, you can often preview various excursions directly on your stateroom’s television. Dedicated shows often highlight the different activities available at upcoming ports, offering valuable visual guidance on what to bring and how to best prepare for each adventure.

Optimizing Your Onboard Experience

Beyond shore excursions, the remainder of your planning involves deciding how you’ll maximize your time onboard the ship. A significant part of this, of course, revolves around exploring the diverse dining options onboard the ship.

I highly recommend booking a day at The Sanctuary for ultimate rest and relaxation. This exclusive, adults-only area of the ship features plush lounge chairs, a serene atmosphere, refreshing fruited water, and personalized service. To fully enjoy this tranquil escape, consider scheduling your Sanctuary day for a sea day, especially after a more physically demanding excursion, allowing you to truly unwind.

The spas on Princess Caribbean Cruises are nothing short of phenomenal. Whether you treat yourself to a revitalizing seaweed wrap, a tension-melting massage, or simply pamper yourself with a professional hair and nail service, a visit to the spa is undoubtedly a highlight of the cruise experience.

But let’s talk about the food… The culinary journey on a Princess MedallionClass cruise is simply exquisite. The traditional dining rooms offer an elegant experience, while the International Cafe delights with its tempting treats available throughout the day. The convenience of 24-hour room service often proves incredibly handy, and the specialty restaurants elevate dining to an art form.

Sabatini’s, for instance, presents an array of exceptional Italian cuisine crafted under the guidance of Chef Angelo Auriana—the executive chef behind renowned Los Angeles restaurants, The Factory Kitchen and Officine BRERA. For steak lovers, Crown Grill is an absolute must-try, boasting some of the best steak I’ve ever had at sea, complemented by outstanding seafood options and delectable side dishes that are truly unforgettable.

The newer Planks BBQ and Steamers restaurants offer fantastic entrees and what I consider to be some of the best desserts onboard. Don’t miss the banana pudding, and be sure to try the Jalapeno Honey Butter and Cornbread, perhaps even for a second helping! Steamers specializes in a variety of incredible seafood, from succulent crab legs to fresh oysters. Planks, on the other hand, delivers a delightful BBQ-style dining experience complete with savory, messy sauces, classic baked beans, and more. Explore all the incredible dining options here.

The beauty of planning a cruise, particularly with Princess, is that you actually don’t need to over-plan. The dedicated cruise director and entertainment team ensure a vibrant atmosphere with a multitude of options to keep you engaged and entertained onboard. With a captivating new destination almost every day, you’ll find plenty to occupy your time and create lasting memories.

Smart Packing for a Stress-Free Caribbean Cruise

Through my cruising experiences, I’ve discovered that packing intelligently can significantly enhance your vacation. I even dedicated an entire post to a detailed Caribbean cruise packing list. Here are a few invaluable items worth highlighting:

  • Magnets: Ship cabin walls are magnetic, making magnets a genius way to organize itineraries, tickets, daily schedules, and important papers, keeping your stateroom tidy and everything accessible.
  • Power Strip: Outlets in staterooms can be notoriously limited. A travel-friendly power strip (non-surge protector, as surge protectors are often prohibited) is essential for charging all your devices simultaneously.
  • Sunscreen: The Caribbean sun is glorious but intense. Bringing your own high-SPF sunscreen onboard is always a wise decision, as prices can be higher in the ship’s shops or at port.
  • Power Bank: Stay charged and connected while exploring ports or relaxing on deck. A portable power bank ensures your phone is always ready for photos and navigation.
  • Sunglasses: The ocean’s reflection and the bright onboard environment make sunglasses indispensable. They also come in handy for concealing any dark circles after an exciting night of dancing, enjoying the piano bar, or experiencing the unique cocktails at Good Spirits!
  • Dramamine or Motion Sickness Medication: While cruise ships are generally stable, some individuals can be prone to motion sickness. Pack non-drowsy medication like Dramamine or seabands as a precautionary measure, ensuring you can enjoy every moment without discomfort. Always check the label for dosage and side effects.

Your Essential Travel Document: The Passport

Of all the items on your packing list, your valid passport is arguably the most critical. You simply cannot board the ship or enter most international ports without it. A current and valid passport is an absolute requirement for all passengers for proper identification and immigration procedures.

While your innovative OceanMedallion serves as your primary ID and cabin key for the duration of the cruise, effectively replacing many functions of a traditional passport onboard, it’s still imperative to have your physical passport initially scanned and linked with your Medallion. Furthermore, I am a firm believer that it’s always prudent to carry your passport with you when you disembark at any port. Consider my sister-in-law’s unfortunate experience: she once missed the ship’s departure at a port and found herself stranded, having to make complex arrangements to return home, all while her passport remained onboard. This caused an immense amount of stress and headache. Learn from her mistake: always bring a valid passport and consider carrying it (or a color copy of it, depending on port rules and personal preference) with you when exploring ashore.

Prepare for Departure: Harnessing MedallionClass Technology

The excitement of anticipating and preparing for a vacation can often be as enjoyable as the trip itself. Get ready for your unparalleled Caribbean cruise experience by downloading the essential MedallionClass apps and ensuring all pre-cruise tasks, like printing luggage tags, are completed.

Princess MedallionClass ships are equipped with an impressive suite of innovative features, and the best way to fully leverage these benefits is by downloading the associated applications. You can visit the official Princess Cruises website for comprehensive details on each of the six powerful Medallion apps:

  1. OceanReady – Apple App Store or Google Play
  2. OceanNow – Apple App Store or Google Play
  3. PlayOcean – Apple App Store or Google Play
  4. OceanCompass – Apple App Store or Google Play
  5. OceanView – Apple App Store or Google Play
  6. OceanCasino – Apple App Store

While all the apps offer fantastic advantages, I particularly recommend downloading these three to ensure the smoothest possible start to your vacation:

  • OceanReady: This indispensable app allows you to upload all your travel documents and complete your Medallion Access Pass (MAP) details well before your departure. Pre-filling this information significantly streamlines the check-in process at the port, getting you onboard and into vacation mode faster.
  • OceanNow: Experience unparalleled convenience with OceanNow, which enables you to order food, drinks, and retail items on demand, delivered directly to your location anywhere on the ship.
  • OceanCompass: This interactive map of the ship is incredibly useful for navigation and, perhaps most impressively, allows you to locate your shipmates in real-time.

Truthfully, all the MedallionClass apps are brilliantly designed and offer unique advantages to enhance your cruise. The only app I didn’t personally download was OceanCasino, as I don’t partake in gambling activities.

NOTE: If you do nothing else prior to your cruise, ensure you fill out all the necessary information within the OceanReady app. This simple step will dramatically speed up your check-in process at the terminal, ensuring you board the ship and begin your vacation without unnecessary delays.

Embarkation Day: Boarding Passes & Luggage Essentials

Embarkation Process:

When you arrive to board your Princess cruise for the first time, having these items readily accessible will ensure a smooth and swift embarkation:

  • Your OceanMedallion (wearing it on a lanyard or wristband makes it effortless).
  • Your physical passport for quick visual identification by port authorities.
  • Your Medallion Access Pass (MAP) screen pulled up on your phone, or preferably, a screenshot of it for easy access even without immediate internet service.
  • Your printed luggage tags, properly attached to your checked bags.

How to get your MAP: Navigate to the OceanReady app. Look beneath your photo, and you’ll see “Open & Save Medallion Access Pass.” Although it might not visually appear as a clickable link, it is. Tap on it and immediately take a screenshot. This screenshot serves as your digital boarding pass, which you’ll present to board the ship. While you can always pull up the screen directly within the app at the terminal, I prefer the screenshot method as a backup, in case cellular service or Wi-Fi is spotty.

Luggage tags: Remember to print out a luggage tag for each piece of baggage you wish to have delivered directly to your stateroom. It’s best to wait until the day of embarkation to attach these tags. Upon your arrival at the port, simply hand your tagged bags to a porter—and don’t forget to show your appreciation with a tip!

Boarding the Ship:

Check-in typically runs from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Upon arrival at the pier, you’ll proceed through the streamlined check-in process. This is where the OceanMedallion apps truly shine; if you’ve completed your information beforehand, the process will be remarkably quick and efficient, minimizing wait times.

Once onboard, your vacation truly begins! While you await the preparation of your stateroom and the ship’s departure, you can immediately start enjoying the vast amenities. Explore the various decks, savor delicious food at one of the casual eateries, order a refreshing drink, soak up the sun, or simply find a cozy spot to relax. A crucial tip: keep a small carry-on bag with essentials like sunglasses, sunscreen, a book, and comfortable shoes. If these items are in your checked luggage, you’ll have to wait until your bags are delivered to your stateroom, which can take a few hours.

Once You Embark:

The ship bustles with exciting activities, world-class entertainment, and an array of dining options awaiting your discovery. After the mandatory safety drill, where you’ll proceed to your assigned muster station to learn about emergency procedures, the rest of your time onboard is entirely yours to enjoy as you please. Have fun, indulge in the incredible food, and make memories that will last a lifetime!

Stay Connected at Sea: MedallionNet Internet Access

Gone are the days when internet access on a cruise was a frustrating and costly endeavor. Historically, passengers faced exorbitant per-minute fees for unreliable, sluggish Wi-Fi. Thankfully, times have dramatically changed! Today, internet connectivity at sea is not only vastly improved but also far more affordable than ever before. While some travelers might prefer an entirely unplugged vacation, if you wish to fully utilize the innovative MedallionClass apps and enjoy robust Wi-Fi access while cruising, MedallionNet is your ultimate solution.

MedallionNet Wi-Fi is available across MedallionClass ships, including the Caribbean Princess, and extends throughout all public spaces. I cannot emphasize enough how truly excellent and remarkably affordable this internet service is. I was genuinely surprised by its high quality. I was able to effortlessly FaceTime with my children, seamlessly stream movies, upload photos and videos to Google Drive to share with my family, access social media platforms, and much more. While there were a few isolated instances where the connection might have slowed slightly or I encountered minor issues uploading a very large video, my overall satisfaction with MedallionNet was exceptionally high.

Once you are comfortably onboard, purchasing a MedallionNet package is a simple process:

  1. Turn on airplane mode on your device to prevent roaming charges.
  2. Open your preferred web browser.
  3. Navigate to login.com (this is Princess’s onboard portal).
  4. Input the required information and select your preferred package, such as multi-device access or Wi-Fi for the entire duration of your cruise.
  5. Complete your purchase, and you’re ready to connect!

Exploring the Gems: A Deeper Dive into Caribbean Ports

Each port of call on a Caribbean cruise offers a unique tapestry of experiences, from sun-kissed beaches to vibrant historical sites. There’s so much to say about each destination that individual posts could be dedicated to them. In the meantime, here are some highlights and essential information for your visit to each captivating stop:

Princess Cays, Bahamas: Your Private Beach Paradise

Princess Cays is Princess Cruises’ exclusive private island destination, a true slice of Bahamian paradise where you can fully immerse yourself in pristine white sands and stunning turquoise waters. While a few historical tours are available, I highly recommend dedicating this day to pure beach enjoyment. Indulge in activities like snorkeling in vibrant reefs, swimming alongside majestic stingrays, or gliding across the water on large water bikes. Find a comfortable lounge chair, get cozy, and let the worries melt away. If you desire a break from the sun, consider renting a private bungalow for a shaded retreat. Order your favorite refreshing drinks and simply savor the idyllic surroundings.

San Juan, Puerto Rico: A Journey Through History and Culture

San Juan is the quintessential port for history enthusiasts and culture seekers. Its charming, colorful colonial buildings, three magnificent historic forts (including El Morro), and iconic streets adorned with vibrant umbrellas offer an abundance of sights and experiences. Be sure to wander through Old San Juan’s cobblestone streets, soak in the rich history, and admire the Spanish colonial architecture.

While exploring, don’t miss the opportunity to try Mofongo, a beloved cultural classic dish made from fried green plantains. And, of course, a refreshing mojito is always an excellent idea! My own Pineapple Mojito recipe was directly inspired by the vibrant flavors of this unforgettable stop.

Amber Cove, Dominican Republic: Adventure Awaits

Amber Cove quickly became my favorite stop on this particular cruise. The port itself is a beautiful, modern development featuring a fantastic array of shopping and dining options. However, it was the excursion I chose here that truly stole the show:

VIP Waterfalls of Damajagua with Lunch: This excursion is an exhilarating adventure that requires a reasonable level of physical fitness (it was almost too challenging for my somewhat out-of-shape self, but incredibly rewarding!). The experience begins with a hike up through lush jungle terrain to reach a series of stunning waterfalls. The descent is the most exciting part, as you navigate your way back down by leaping into crystal-clear pools and sliding down natural rock slides. It was an absolutely amazing and unforgettable experience, providing the perfect blend of adventure and natural beauty for a truly memorable day.

Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos: Underwater Wonders & Island Flavors

Turks and Caicos is renowned for having some of the most breathtakingly beautiful waters in the world, making Grand Turk an absolute must-visit for lovers of marine life. This is the ideal destination for exceptional snorkeling, incredible wild stingray encounters, relaxing beach time, and indulging in delicious local food. Make sure to visit the Jack Shack for their famous Jerk Wings – my recipe for Jerk Chicken Marinade was inspired by these incredible flavors.

The stingray encounter, in particular, was an awe-inspiring experience. These magnificent creatures are truly wild, living freely in their natural habitat, not in any enclosure. You have the unique opportunity to touch them gently, even share a “kiss,” and watch them gracefully glide around your feet in the crystal-clear shallows. It’s an intimate and respectful interaction with nature that you won’t soon forget.
